ACTA Foundation

Our Mission

The ACTA Foundation is committed to the promotion of creative efforts in adult catechesis in the Roman Catholic Tradition. We draw our inspiration and mandate from the National Directory for Catechesis, the 1992 document Adult Catechesis in the Christian Community, and the statement of the U.S. Bishops, Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us: A Pastoral Plan for Adult Faith Formation in the United States. From these documents we learn that the catechesis of adults aims at conversion to the Lord, active membership in the Christian community, and becoming a Christian disciple in the world.

The following quote from the National Directory for Catechesis impresses upon us the comprehensive nature of adult catechesis:

"Adult catechesis requires a comprehensive, multifaceted, and coordinated approach and a variety of learning activities, such as participation in liturgical experiences, Scripture reading and study, retreats and experiences of prayer, family or home-centered activities, ecumenical dialogue, small-group experiences, large group experiences, and individual activities." (#48)

The ACTA Foundation recognizes the enormous challenge facing the Church today in our pastoral efforts to foster an effective, relevant and creative catechesis for adults. ACTA's mission is not to produce programs or strategies for catechesis but to encourage and promote these efforts more broadly and to support them through its grant potential. ACTA welcomes the submission of grant applications that fulfill the spirit and intention of ACTA's mission.

"Whatever method is chosen for adult catechesis, it is always a basic organic formation in the faith that includes a serious study of Christian doctrine integrated with formation in Christian living. Effective adult catechesis relates the content of the faith to life experience. It enables the Christian to read the signs of the times in the light of the Gospel." (National Directory for Catechesis, #48)
